A doctor revealed what you should eat before consuming alcohol. Dr Nina Chandrasekaran, a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist, told TikTok that a food that is a favourite of many is ideal as it contains a lot of protein.
"If you are going to have a night out and drink alcohol, eating cheese before drinking alcohol can reduce the risk of a hangover. That's because cheese contains a lot of protein, fat and complex carbohydrates that can coat the stomach, which reduces alcohol absorption. Cheese can help the body metabolise alcohol better and prevent liver damage," Chandrasekaran said.
"Cheese also replenishes nutrients because it is full of B vitamin and calcium. These specific nutrients are depleted from the body when alcohol is consumed," the specialist added.
In addition to vital nutrients, calcium specifically helps improve nerve and muscle function. Not only that, but vitamin B is "necessary for energy metabolism."
According to Harvard Health, "the causes are as varied as the symptoms. Alcohol is metabolized into acetaldehyde, a substance that is toxic at high levels. However, concentrations rarely reach this high, so this is not the full explanation."
In addition to this, they also support the doctor's claims that vitamin B is key. Discussing the "cure" for hangovers, they say:
"A study published in The Journal of Clinical Medicine evaluated diets for 24 hours before and after excessive drinking. It was a small study and the results were based on participants telling what they had eaten. However, they found that people whose food and drink consumption contained higher amounts of zinc and B vitamins had less severe hangovers." | BGNES
