Bulgarian PM Zhelyazkov: A just and lasting peace can be achieved through security for Ukraine and the EU

It is clear that the geopolitical dynamics are predetermined by the war in Ukraine - both as a cause and as a consequence of all the processes that are unfolding not only in Europe.

Bulgaria can neither actively nor passively afford to be put in a situation of choosing its support and attitude to the war in different trends that are expressed by the EU and the US. We regard them as NATO allies and as joint guarantors of the protection of our national security. A just and lasting peace can be achieved through security for Ukraine and for the EU.

This is what Prime Minister of Bulgaria Rosen Zhelyazkov said after the end of the Security Council at the Council of Ministers, BGNES reported.

Our national security is a shared responsibility between all political forces. The risks for our national security in two hypotheses were discussed - if the war continues, and if the war is terminated, as well as in hypotheses in which the US withdraws, or continues to support Ukraine in a different form. We also looked at the possibilities of the European Commission in three directions - generating resources in a special fund, in which Bulgaria would also participate; the possibilities through our national budget through the possibility of derogating from the deficit clause, as well as the possibilities of using the cohesion fund and other EU funds to generate resources, which in the words of the President of the European Commission would amount to nearly 800 billion euros. It is important for us to use these opportunities to put our military industry on its development, with better coordination between public and private enterprises in the sector, Prime Minister Zhelyazkov added.

The theme of the meeting was "Review and analysis of the current geopolitical situation and the resulting risks to national security".

The chairmen of all parliamentary groups were also invited to participate in the meeting. | BGNES
