Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was detained by the Prosecutor General's Office, G4Media reported. Prosecutors have applied for an arrest warrant and the detainee has now been taken to the Prosecutor General's Office.
Calin Georgescu is under investigation by the Prosecutor General's Office, in which he is accused of participating in a fascist organisation and propagating in public space controversial ideologies and historical figures such as Marshal Antonescu.
The action took place on the same day that the Prosecutor General's Office carried out dozens of searches in the group of the mercenary Horatsiu Potra, head of Georgescu's security team.
After learning of Porta's arrest, the presidential candidate said:
"The communist-Bolshevik system continues its odious abuses! Today, at 6 o'clock in the morning, they descended again on families in dozens of localities, waking children from sleep. They are looking to invent evidence to justify the theft of the elections, and to do everything to block my new candidacy for the presidency. They have been searching for three months now without success. I, on behalf of my constituents, but also on behalf of those who, although they have other political leanings, want a democratic and free Romania - I am fighting this security system that wants to put us in bondage. We are living under communism, there is nothing free and legal about everything that is happening. I will not give up, I count on your support, on everyone's support, and I am waiting for you on 1 March, in Victory Square!"
During the searches, prosecutors found weapons, live ammunition and more than a million dollars hidden in a safe.
BGNES reminds that Georgescu won the first round of the last presidential elections, but Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the second round after declassified intelligence documents from the president's office listed "aggressive Russian hybrid actions", including cyberattacks.
The documents also described the massive promotion of Georgescu on social networks in the run-up to the vote.
The presidential candidate denies any ties to Moscow. New elections will be held in May. | BGNES
