Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a 30-day halt to strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure after talks with his US counterpart Donald Trump, the Kremlin said.
But Putin said that for there to be a broader ceasefire, Ukraine must not be allowed to rearm and must halt mandatory mobilisation.
The Kremlin said the two leaders had a "detailed and frank exchange of views."
Putin outlined a number of conditions for an eventual ceasefire, including "the need to stop both the forced mobilisation in Ukraine and the rearmament of the Ukrainian armed forces", the Kremlin said.
It also questioned how such a ceasefire could be monitored.
Trump proposed a 30-day suspension of strikes on energy facilities and "Vladimir Putin responded positively and immediately gave the Russian military the appropriate order," the statement added.
Russia and Ukraine will also swap 175 prisoners after the call, the Kremlin said.
Putin said the conflict in Ukraine could only be resolved in the long term if the West stopped military and intelligence support for Ukraine.
"The main condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and for working on its resolution by political and diplomatic means must be the complete cessation of foreign military aid and the provision of intelligence to Kiev," the Kremlin said. | BGNES
