Robert De Niro will receive an honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival at the opening ceremony of the 78th edition of the festival on May 13.

The following day, the iconic American actor will take part in a masterclass on the stage of the Debussy Theatre, Euronews reported.

"I have very warm feelings for the Cannes Festival. Especially now, when there are so many things in the world that keep us apart, Cannes brings us together - storytellers, filmmakers, fans and friends. It's like coming home," the actor said.

De Niro has had a long association with the Cannes Film Festival. He chaired the jury in 2011 and last walked the red carpet there for Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon."

In 1976, De Niro starred in two films in competition, Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver , which won the Palme d'Or.

In 1982, he opened the festival with Scorsese's The King of Comedy, and the following year presented Once Upon a Time in America, Sergio Leone's last film before returning with Roland Joffé's The Mission, which also won the Palme.

This year's Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13 to 24. French actress Juliette Binoche will replace Greta Gerwig as jury president at this year's festival. It will be the second time in history that the jury has been headed by a woman in two consecutive years - since 1966, when Sophia Loren took over as jury president from Olivia de Havilland. | BGNES
