Turkish authorities have detained the lawyer of arrested Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is also Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's biggest political opponent, Al Arabiya reported.
Imamoglu was jailed on March 23 pending trial for corruption, sparking the largest anti-government protests in a decade, which in turn led to mass arrests across the country.
Mehmet Pehlivan, the lawyer who defended Imamoglu in the latest investigation, was detained "for fabricated reasons," People's Republican Party (CHP) lawmaker Turan Taskin Ozer said in an X op-ed, without giving details.
Imamoglu, who has been suspended from his job over the case, demanded the immediate release of his lawyer.
"As if the coup against democracy was not enough, they cannot bear the victims of this coup to defend themselves," the suspended mayor wrote in X. | BGNES
