Kremlin: Senior Russian negotiator may visit US this week

His visit will be the first by a senior Russian official to the US since Moscow launched its offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.

The Kremlin said its negotiator Kirill Dmitriev could visit the US this week.

US media reported that he was expected in Washington to meet Donald Trump's envoy Steve Whitkoff, AFP reported.

Dmitriev participated in Russia-US talks in Saudi Arabia in February and his visit will be the first by a senior Russian official to the US since Moscow launched its offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.

"Yes, confirmed. This visit may be possible. We continue to talk with the Americans. I will not give more specific (details)," Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said when asked about reports of the planned visit.

President Vladimir Putin appointed Dmitriev as the Kremlin's envoy on international economic affairs. Moscow has sought to warm ties with Washington during Donald Trump's presidency.

Russia is hoping for an easing of sweeping sanctions on its economy under Trump.

His visit to the United States comes at a time when Russia and Ukraine are accusing each other of violating agreements brokered by Washington in Saudi Arabia in March.

Citing its own sources, CNN reported that the US had temporarily lifted sanctions on Dmitriev to allow his visit.

On social media, the Russian negotiator wrote "maybe" in a post sharing a link to the CNN report.

Whitkoff has traveled to Russia before to meet with Putin.

Europe and Kiev fear the Trump administration could strike a deal with Moscow over Ukraine or lift sanctions on the Russian economy in an attempt to force a ceasefire on terms favorable to Russia. | BGNES
