Ukrainian delegation to visit US this week for talks on minerals deal

Kyiv argues that any deal must include robust security guarantees to act as a deterrent to further Russian attacks.

Ukraine will send officials to Washington in the coming days for further talks on the deal, which gives the US preferential access to Ukrainian natural resources.

This was stated by Kyiv's Economy Minister Yulia Sviridenko, AFP reports.

The two countries had planned to sign the deal last month to extract strategically important minerals from Ukraine until a spectacular televised clash between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky scuppered the agreement.

"This week, Ukraine will send a delegation to Washington to continue negotiations on a strategic agreement with the United States regarding critical natural resources," Sviridenko wrote on social media.

Trump wants the deal, which would grant the U.S. royalties on profits from Ukrainian extraction of raw materials and rare minerals, as compensation for the military and financial aid provided to Ukraine by his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Kyiv argues that any deal must include robust security guarantees to act as a deterrent to further Russian attacks.

Sviridenko said the new negotiations would take into account "the strategic interests of both countries and our shared commitment to building a strong and transparent partnership." | BGNES
