Archaeologists have discovered confirmation of a famous biblical event - the death of the Judean King Josiah in battle with the Egyptians.

In Israel, excavations in the area of the hill of Megiddo (in Greek Armageddon) have shown that at the end of the 7th century BC there were indeed Egyptian troops here, reports the Daily Mail. Scientists have discovered the remains of a large facility containing ceramic vessels brought from Ancient Egypt, as well as several amphorae of Eastern Greek origin. Such finds have not been recorded in this area before. According to archaeologists, such vessels could belong to Greek mercenaries who served in the Egyptian army - this is mentioned by ancient sources, including the historian Herodotus. This data coincides with the biblical description of the battle between Josiah, king of Judah, and Pharaoh Necho II in 609 BC.

Why this particular battle took place at Megiddo remains a mystery. Perhaps Josiah was trying to stop the Egyptian army moving north into Syria, or perhaps he was failing to fulfill his obligations to Egypt as a vassal.

The discoveries may explain why Armageddon has become a symbol of the decisive battle in the Christian tradition. It is likely that the tragic death of King Josiah, a religious reformer and descendant of David, at this place made it a symbol of the final battle between good and evil, described in the Book of Revelation by John the Theologian. Now scientists believe that behind this image there is not only a religious meaning, but also very specific historical events.

In April, archaeologists found evidence of another biblical story - the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Scientists have discovered a marble burial on the grounds of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus is believed to be buried. | BGNES
