McIlroy closing in on career Grand Slam after stunning third round at Masters

The Northern Irishman leads Bryson DeChambeau by two shots before the final day.

Rory McIlroy moved closer to his much-coveted career Grand Slam after taking a two-shot lead at the end of the third day of the Masters.

The Northern Irishman started the day two strokes behind Justin Rose but made an impressive start to the third round at Augusta National after making a birdie and an eagle. He was at -5 for the day through the first five holes. The world No. 2 then recovered from a mid-round slump, birdying the 13th and making an eagle at the 15th hole. With a 6-under 66 for the day, Rory took a two-stroke lead over his nearest challenger, U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, who birdied three of his last four holes.

A win in Augusta would make McIlroy just the sixth player in the modern era to win a career Grand Slam, and the first since Tiger Woods. He has 21 top-10 finishes in majors since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

Canada's Corey Connors is third at -8, while Ludvig Aberg and Patrick Reed are both at -6. World No. 1 and last year's champion Scottie Scheffler is seven strokes behind McIlroy, tied for sixth with three other golfers - Jason Day, Shane Lowry and Rose. | BGNES
