Sydney-based Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters has been named the best coffee shop in the world. It is followed by Onyx Coffee Lab from Arkansas, Gota Coffee Experts from Vienna, Proud Mary Coffee from Melbourne and Tim Wendelboe from Oslo.
The remaining spots in the top ten are filled by cafes located in Singapore, France, Malaysia and Colombia, CNN reported.
According to the rankings website, cafes around the world were evaluated on a variety of factors, from the quality of coffee and food to sustainability practices and customer service. Both public opinions and expert ratings were taken into account to arrive at the final selection, according to the "World's 100 Best Coffee Shops."
Jodie Leslie, general manager of Toby's Estate, said her entire team was "completely stunned" when they learned of the result.
"We've been doing coffee for a long time and we know what we do is amazing and we try to be consistent, so to get this recognition is just amazing," she said.
The company's main store is in Sydney's south-western Chippendale district and was the winner of the recognition, but it has branches across Australia and Asia, including Singapore, Indonesia and the Middle East.
Leslie said sales had increased since the results were announced, which had attracted more visitors wanting to try her team's coffee. To thank its customers for their support, Toby's Estate will organise a free coffee day on 27 February.
Toby's Estate's flagship store has a bar where coffee is brewed in front of customers and an on-site roastery where fresh beans are roasted daily.
The coffee chain began operating in 1997, when lawyer Toby Smith started the business from his mother's garage in Woolumolu, a harbourside eastern suburb of Sydney.
Arkansas-based Onyx Coffee Lab came in second. The company has three branches in Bentonville, Fayetteville and Springdale, but it's unclear which one made the list. Gota Coffee in Vienna, ranked third, also took to social media to express gratitude for the recognition. | BGNES
