They rocked the island amid seismic activity that has been ongoing for two weeks.
An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded at 11:02 a.m. on February 9, 26 km northeast of Oia, Santorini. It occurred after another 4.1-magnitude quake at 3:30 a.m. northwest of Anafi, according to the National Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory.
Although scientists attribute the activity mostly to a seismic swarm, concerns remain about the possibility of a stronger quake. Authorities have ruled out the possibility of volcanic activity at Santorini's Nea Kameni or at the underwater volcano Columbo.
Precautionary measures include school closures on Santorini and nearby islands until 14 February, traffic restrictions in landslide-prone areas and emergency preparedness. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently announced funding of €3 million for an evacuation route on Santorini. | BGNES
