Warner Bros's new video game-based film, "A Minecraft Movie," broke records in its opening weekend in North American theaters, grossing an estimated $157 million in ticket sales, analysts said.
Total receipts for the film, made with Legendary Pictures and starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge, far exceeded expectations, making it the biggest domestic opening of the year.
It's also the most successful video game adaptation to surpass Super Mario Bros. Film's $146 million since 2023.
With $144 million in overseas ticket sales, the film's estimated $301 million more than doubled its production budget, which was not $150 million, Variety reported, attributing it in part to the immense popularity of the video game, of which more than 300 million copies have been sold.
"The domestic box office was asleep in 2025, and this is a belated wake-up call," said analyst David A. Gross.
He said the film has remarkable appeal to different generations and that while the reviews are not good, these films are meant for moviegoers, not critics.
A distant second for the Friday-to-Sunday period was MGM's "Working Man," an action thriller starring Jason Statham, with $7.3 million.
In third place, with $6.7 million, was "The Chosen One: The Last Supper, Part 2," the latest episode in the Fathom Events Company's series about Jesus and his disciples.
"Snow White" took fourth place with $6.1 million. Made for an estimated $250 million, the film's domestic total of just $77.4 million in three weeks overseas, along with $90 million in foreign sales, is considered a major disappointment for Disney.
And Universal's horror film The Woman in the Yard, starring Daniel Dedwyer, ranked fifth with $4.5 million.
The top 10 is completed by:
"Death of a Unicorn" ($2.7 million)
"The Chosen: The Last Supper, Part 1" ($1.9 million)
"Hell of a Summer" ($1.8 million)
"The Friend" ($1.6 million)
"Captain America: Brave New World ($1.4 million)
