World's most decorated gymnast Simone Biles was named Sportsman of the Year, while pole-vaulter Armand Duplantis took the men's award at the Laureus awards ceremony in Madrid.
Biles, who won gold in the team, all-around and vault events, as well as silver on floor at the Paris Olympics last summer to make a triumphant return after a three-year absence, won the award for the fourth time in her career. She is now tied with tennis legend and compatriot Serena Williams.
Last year's men's winner Novak Djokovic presented Duplantis with the award, his first of his career, having been nominated in each of the past three years. He is only the second athlete to win the award after Usain Bolt. Already considered by many to be one of the greatest pole-vaulters of all time, Duplantis won a second consecutive Olympic gold medal in Paris, breaking his own world record for the ninth time, before bettering it again at the Silesia stop a month later.
Barcelona's superstar Lamine Yamal won the Breakthrough of the Year award after winning the European Championship with Spain. He is the sixth footballer to win the award.
The Laureus Awards nominees are selected by the world's media, while the winners are chosen by the 69 members of the Laureus Sports Academy. The awards have been presented annually since 2000.
