Bulgarian Defense Minister Zapryanov: It’s too early for Bulgaria to have an opinion on a possible peacekeeping operation in Ukraine

When a decision is taken on a peacekeeping operation in Ukraine, Bulgaria will have an opinion, it is too early to say anything now. This is what Bulgarian Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said in response to a question by BGNES.

When a decision is taken on a peacekeeping operation in Ukraine, Bulgaria will have an opinion, it is too early to say anything now.  This is what Bulgarian Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said in response to a question by BGNES.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron commented on the possibilities of ending the war in Ukraine. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia was not opposed to EU involvement in settling the situation in Ukraine, but considered the position of other countries important. According to Trump, Putin is ready to "accept" the European peacekeepers deployed in Ukraine as guarantors of the agreement to end the fighting.
What is Russia's position on all the issues of the ceasefire with Ukraine - nothing is clear, the door is ajar that they would agree to peacekeepers. We do not know what Ukraine's position is. We do not know what the mandate of these peacekeeping forces will be, who will give this mandate, Atanas Zapryanov said today.
The Bulgarian Defence Minister noted that an internationally legitimate operation is only mandated by the Security Council - under the UN Charter and the rules of international law.
That is why it is too early to say anything about a possible peacekeeping operation, Zapryanov stated in response to a question asked by BGNES.
Our Parliament has made a declaration that no troops will be sent into the current situation where hostilities are taking place. I am tired of explaining for three years that we are not a party to this war, that we will not send troops. When a decision is taken, we are in two alliances - NATO and the EU - in both alliances this subject will be discussed. Bulgaria will have a holy opinion and then our parliament will intervene, because sending troops for peacekeeping operations, including as in Kosovo, in Bosnia, is a decision of our parliament with the mandate given by the UN Security Council, the military minister said.
Now we are talking about negotiations, Zapryanov insisted.
Zapryanov urged the media to separate the existence of NATO from the peace talks in Ukraine.
NATO has a different agenda, that's where we and America work and all European allies. Yes, we will have to increase defence spending, he added. | BGNES
