A US Democratic senator broke the record for the longest speech in Senate history with a passionate protest against President Donald Trump's "unconstitutional" actions. The speech began Monday and lasted into Tuesday - a total of 25 hours and 5 minutes.

Senator Cory Booker showed extraordinary stamina. He had to stand up straight to stay on the podium and couldn't even go to the bathroom.

The longest speech ever in the Senate was given by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

"It's not about right or left. Don't let them say it's political bias. That's not true. America, this is a moral point. Does the Constitution live in your heart?"

The 55-year-old politician is a native of New Jersey. He also found a moment for some humor, joking, "I want to get this done and then I'm going to deal with some of the biological urgencies that I'm experiencing."

His defiance quickly became a rallying point for desperate Democrats.

He lashed out at Trump's radical policy of cutting federal government spending, which has resulted in his chief adviser, Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, cutting entire government programs without the consent of Congress.

The senator said Trump's aggressive seizure of more executive power has put American democracy at risk.

"Unnecessary hardship is being endured by Americans from all walks of life. And institutions that are special in America, precious and unique in our country, are being recklessly - and I would even say unconstitutionally - infringed upon, attacked, even destroyed," Booker said.

"In just 71 days, the president of the United States has done so much damage to the security of Americans, to financial stability, to the basic foundations of our democracy," he stressed. | BGNES, AFP
