Istanbul City Council will elect an interim mayor after Ekrem Imamoglu of the People's Republican Party was arrested last Sunday on corruption charges.
The Beylikdüzü district will also have a new mayor, Turkiyetoday reported. A local district governor was appointed as a trustee to run the municipality in Istanbul's Shishli district after its mayor, Resul Shahan, was arrested in the same procedure that led to the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and Mehmet Murat Çalık.
Unlike Imamoglu and Çalık, Şahan was arrested for terrorism-related offences, in which under current laws the state automatically takes over the mayoralty without any elections. | BGNES
