Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the Madrid Masters. The second seed has revealed that he is suffering from hamstring and groin problems. This is bad news for the two-time champion in the Spanish capital, as it could significantly disrupt his preparation for defending his title at Roland Garros in May.
Alcaraz, who was reported earlier today to be withdrawing from his home tournament, suffered the injuries in the final in Barcelona, where he was stopped on his way to a third trophy by Holger Rune. He defeated the Monte Carlo champion in straight sets.
"I couldn't train all week and I discovered that I had problems with my hamstring and groin. I had to listen to my body and make the right decision. On Monday I will undergo further medical examinations and then we will know more about how long I will be out", he told reporters.
The Spaniard was resting in the first round of the main draw and was scheduled to play on Friday. This opens the way for both Bulgaria's best player Grigor Dimitrov and Novak Djokovic, who are in Alcaraz's half. | BGNES
