Boxing will be part of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. It has returned to the program of the Games after a unanimous decision of the International Olympic Committee during the session of the world headquarters in Greece.
Late last month, the IOC granted provisional status to World Boxing, which was the first major step towards the return of the sport to the Olympic program.
Today's decision ends years of speculation and doubts about whether one of the oldest sports in the Olympic movement would continue to be part of it after the scandal between the IOC and the International Boxing Association (IBA), which was expelled in 2023. At the Paris Olympics last year, the IOC took on the organization of the boxing tournament, but the organization's president Thomas Bach said that this was the last such case and if there is no new world federation to deal with it, it will not be part of future Olympics.
"Thank you for the approval for the return of boxing. We look to the future with the expectation of a great boxing tournament", said Thomas Bach after the vote.
Boxing was not part of the preliminary program of sports for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2023, which also accelerated the acceptance of new members into the World Boxing organization. The Bulgarian Boxing Federation, which has already submitted its documents, should also become part of it in the near future. The President of World Boxing, Boris van der Vorst, was also visiting Sofia a few days ago. | BGNES
