Rory McIlroy has won the Players Championship for the second time in his professional career. He defeated JJ Spaun in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass in Florida today.
The Northern Irishman turned things around on the final day of the tournament yesterday after falling four shots behind the leader to pull three back. But the drama wasn't over, as thunderstorms forced a four-hour delay. In the end, Sunday's playoff ended with McIlroy and Spaun tied at 12 under.
The pair returned today for a three-hole playoff. McIlroy took control of the game and held on to his lead. A birdie and two bogeys over the three holes were enough for the Northern Irishman to win after Spaun's hopes of a surprise triumph ended with a triple bogey on the 17th.
For McIlroy, it was his second Players Championship victory of his career and his first since 2019. He is the first golfer with two titles on the Professional Golf Tour (PGA) this season. Rory also collected a winner's prize share for $4,500,000. | BGNES
