Lando Norris with McLaren won the Australian Grand Prix, the first round of the Formula One season. After 57 laps filled with enormous pressure and constantly changing times, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and George Russell (Mercedes) were on the podium.
The race in Melbourne was dramatic to the last due to the wet track, changing conditions and frequent crashes. On three occasions a safety car had to be brought in.
The rain virtually ruined McLaren's double triumph as Oscar Piastri was running in second place until lap 44 before it rained very heavily on the track, causing the Australian driver to make a mistake which dropped him down the order.
Fourth after a brilliant debut was Andrea Kimi Antonelli. However, the Italian was penalised five seconds after the finish for a dangerous return to the lane in front of the pits after one of his tyre change stops. That dropped him to fifth place, with Alex Albon finishing ahead of him.
The remaining positions in the points area were occupied by Lance Stroll, Nico Hulkenberg, Charles Leclerc, Piastri and Lewis Hamilton, whose debut for Ferrari certainly did not live up to expectations.
