EU countries give green light to plan to strengthen bloc's defence

Leaders of the 27 EU countries gathered for a summit in Brussels have given the green light to the European Commission's plan to strengthen defence, an EU spokeswoman said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week proposed a plan called "ReArm Europe" that aims to mobilise some 800 billion euros, including 150 billion in loans, to bolster the continent's defence capabilities, AFP reported.

Those in the room will now move on to discuss support for Ukraine.

This is likely to prove more contentious. Hungary has publicly signalled that it intends to try to block draft text calling for additional aid and further sanctions against Russia.

More details are to be expected. | BGNES
