Berrettini knocks out Zverev in Monte-Carlo second round

10th seed Holger Rune is also out of the tournament.

Alexander Zverev is out of the Monte-Carlo Masters. The number 1 seed suffered a setback and lost to Matteo Berrettini in three sets - 6-2, 3-6, 5-7, in nearly two and a half hours of play.

The first set was under the control of the German, who made two breaks to convincingly take the lead. In the second, however, Berrettini responded to the challenge and after a break in the sixth game, managed to bring the clash to a third decisive set. It was a dramatic one. The Italian was the first to break, but then had to save a break point. In the tenth game, however, Berrettini cracked and Zverev saved his skin at the last possible moment. However, in the very next game, the second in the world rankings failed and allowed another break, which this time he was unable to return.

Berrettini will play in the round of 16 with the winner of the match between Jiri Lehecka and the 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

The tenth seed Holger Rune is also out of the competition. The Dane was forced to retire in his match with Nuno Borges from Portugal with a score of 2-6, 0-3. Alexei Popirin, Pedro Martinez, Roberto Bautista Agut, Flavio Cobolli, Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Tomas Machac recorded victories today. | BGNES
