End of an era as De Bruyne to leave Manchester City this summer

The Belgian's trophy-laden period at Etihad will come to an end as his contract expires.

Kevin De Bruyne has officially announced that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season. The City captain announced that "these will be my last months as a Manchester City player" in a post on social media. The Belgian, whose contract expires in the summer, arrived at the Etihad in 2015 from Wolfsburg for a fee of £54.5m, scoring 106 goals in 413 appearances for the club during a trophy-laden spell.

The 33-year-old will go down as one of the greatest players in Premier League history, having won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five Carabao Cups and the Champions League in an unprecedented spell at City. De Bruyne was also part of the team that won treble in the 2022/23 season.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola described De Bruyne as "one of the greatest" to have played in England, and the Belgian midfielder thanked the City fans in his farewell post, but it is still unclear where he will continue his career.

"None of this is easy to write, but as footballers, we all know that this day will inevitably come. That day has come - and you deserve to hear it from me first. Football brought me to all of you - and to this city. To chase my dream, not knowing that this period would change my life. This city. This club. These people... gave me everything. I had no choice but to give them back in kind! And guess what - we won it all", said De Bruyne, who is second in assists in Premier League history, behind only Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs. | BGNES
