Selena Gomez: It's more complicated for women to deal with negative comments on social media

Selena Gomez thinks women have it "a lot harder" than men when it comes to negative comments on social media.

Selena Gomez thinks women have it "a lot harder" than men when it comes to negative comments on social media.

The singer and actress commented on the impact of online hate in an interview she gave to Jay Shetty alongside her fiancé, songwriter and record producer Benny Blanco.

In the interview on the "On Purpose With Jay Shetty" podcast, the couple, who are promoting their collaborative album "I Said I Love You First," discussed their relationship and the impact being in the public sphere has had on her.

Blanco said she never reads comments on social media and that she prefers to "free fall through life."

But the 32-year-old Gomez is not so carefree.

"Women have it much harder," she said, adding that women deal with "much stronger feelings" about their appearance.

The star said that from her point of view, the situation is "pretty wild", and added: "When I'm getting ready for an event, 90% of the time I just hope I can take the picture and sit down."

She said she sometimes "falls victim" to looking at things that are written about her online, but "it doesn't add to your life".

"Nobody cares about that kind of stuff with men," Gomez said, adding that women are picked on for everything from their looks to who they date. "We just wear a lot," she claimed.

"My weight is also important. Everyone just has something to say and it really makes me sad. It's not even sad because, you know, no, I'm not a victim. I just think it's maybe a little bitter. And I feel really guilty saying it, but it's true," Gomez said.

She said she's had to cut herself off from social media before, adding, "I'm human, so of course I read stuff sometimes, but most of the time I ignore most of what's written."

Gomez said he doesn't currently have social media on his phone, though he appreciates the good side of it. "I understand the power of what social media is - it's just complicated." | BGNES
