The German Foreign Ministry has officially expressed its concern about the political situation in Serbia, BGNES reports.
"The situation in Serbia continues to be of serious concern. Civil activists are under attack and smear campaigns for raising their voices. The media and politicians must act responsibly", reads a statement of the German Foreign Ministry published on X.
"Serbia is an EU candidate and as such we expect it to respect the rule of law and human rights," Berlin's statement said.
Neighbouring Serbia is in its fourth month of mass protests against the regime of President Aleksandar Vucic. Discontent erupted after the collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad on November 1. The incident killed 15 people. Students are leading the protest against Vucic. On several occasions, mass protests have had hundreds of thousands of participants.
Vucic himself and the media he controls claim that the students are organising a colour revolution that is financed from foreign powers. I BGNES
