Tesla's sales in Germany saw a further decline last month, official figures show, after the company's billionaire owner, Elon Musk, endorsed the far-right AfD during the country's recent election campaign.
The US group registered just 1,429 electric vehicles in Europe's biggest car market in February, down more than 76% year-on-year, the federal transport authority KBA said.
Tesla's sales had already fallen by almost 60% in January following Musk's intervention in German politics. In the first two months of 2025, group sales in Germany were down 70 percent.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party recorded a historic result in national elections on 23 February, securing almost 21 per cent of the vote.
Sales of electric cars in Germany have suffered over the past year after the government withdrew a key subsidy programme and European demand for battery-powered vehicles declined.
Tesla's continued sales decline, however, contrasts with the recovery of the broader electric vehicle sector.
A total of around 36,000 battery-powered vehicles were registered in Germany in February, up around 31% on the same month last year.
Overall, the number of new vehicle registrations fell to around 203,400, down 6.4% compared to the previous month. | BGNES
