For the second time in two days, Trump is easing tariffs against imports from the United States' two biggest trading partners.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed orders significantly expanding the scope of goods exempt from his new tariffs on Canada and Mexico imposed this week.
It is the second time in two days that Trump has eased tariffs on imports from the United States' two biggest trading partners, measures that have heightened uncertainty for businesses and unnerved financial markets.
He said he would temporarily spare automakers from the 25 percent levies just a day after they took effect.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum thanked Trump for the decision, and Canada's finance minister said the country would in turn refrain from a second round of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on the morning of March 6 that he had a "colorful" conversation about the tariffs in a phone call with Trump.
The US president used obscene language more than once during the heated exchange, US media reported.
Trudeau also said a trade war between the two allies was likely for the foreseeable future, despite some targeted easing.
"Our goal remains to eliminate these tariffs, all tariffs," he stressed. | BGNES, AFP
