Georgescu will not be allowed to run in Romania's presidential elections

Pro-Russian Calin Giurgescu will not be allowed to participate in the presidential elections in Romania.

Pro-Russian Călin Georgescu will not be allowed to participate in the presidential elections in Romania.

Georgescu's candidacy was cancelled by the Central Electoral Bureau. Four members of the bureau voted in favour and 10 against the candidacy.

Supporters of the politician attempted to storm the headquarters of the body, necessitating the intervention of the gendarmerie. The situation is currently under control.

BGNES recalls that Georgescu won the first round of the last presidential elections, but Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the second round after declassified documents from the president's office listed "aggressive Russian hybrid actions" of his team, including cyberattacks.

The documents also described the massive promotion of Georgescu on social media in the run-up to the vote, especially on TikTok.

The new elections will be held in May. | BGNES
