The Greek parliament will vote today on the opposition's motion for a vote of no confidence against the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The motion was prompted by the country's worst train crash in 2023, which is sparking growing protests.
The Greek prime minister's ruling New Democracy party has 156 MPs in the 300-seat chamber, enough to survive the vote, which is expected to take place late today after three days of debate.
About 8,000 people gathered outside parliament on the 5th of March, and more than 300,000 people across the country took part in demonstrations last week to mark the second anniversary of the train crash that killed 57 people.
Police dispersed both demonstrations with tear gas and stun grenades after demonstrators set fire to garbage bins and threw firebombs.
Another rally is expected in the coming hours.
The train crash occurred on February 28, 2023, when a train from Athens to Thessaloniki carrying more than 350 passengers collided with a freight train in Tempi, central Greece.
The two trains ran opposite each other on the same track for miles without setting off any alarms. Faulty equipment and human error have been blamed for the accident. | BGNES
