Make it 100! Shiffrin triumphant in Sestriere slalom

The American was victorious three months after her last World Cup win.

Mikaela Shiffrin has earned her long-awaited 100th career World Cup victory in alpine skiing. The American triumphed in today's slalom in the Italian ski resort of Sestriere to make history. Her first win was on December 20, 2012 in the slalom in Ore, Sweden.

The 29-year-old skier has been struggling with injuries this season, having last won the slalom in Gurgl, Austria, on November 23. Today, she took the lead after the first run and did not relinquish it in the second. As in the first run, Croatia's Zrinka Ljutić was second, 0.61 behind the winner. Shiffrin's compatriot Paula Moltzan was third.

The top 10 also included Katharina Liensberger (Austria), 19-year-old Swede Cornelia Oehlund, who was 23rd after the first run, but was fastest in the second, Germans Emma Aicher and Lena Duerr, Anna Sven Larsson (Sweden), Wendy Holdener (Switzerland) and Andreja Slokar (Slovenia). All 30 competitors completed the second run.

Shiffrin celebrated her 100th anniversary victory for the WC - 63 in slalom, 22 in giant slalom, 5 in Super-G, 4 in downhill, 1 in alpine combined and 5 in parallel disciplines. Today's podium is her 155th in the career of the five-time winner of the Great Crystal Globe.

Shiffrin is 15th in the general standings now with 377 points - 622 behind leader Federica Brignone from Italy. The American is sixth in the slalom standings, 163 points behind Ljutich, who has a slim 39-point lead over Camille Rast of Switzerland with two races remaining.

The women have three races in Kvitfjell, Norway, next week - downhills on February 28 and March 1, and a Super-G on March 2. | BGNES
