Clashes broke out between farmers and the gendarmerie in the town of Bogatich, about 100 km west of Belgrade, broadcaster N1 reported.
Farmers blocked one of the streets with tractors, but the gendarmerie intervened and clashes broke out. "We organized today here, when the agricultural fair is taking place, to park our tractors on the side, and leave one lane free, to have our fair, but we came across police, gendarmerie. We who are against this regime and are fighting for our rights cannot go to the fair. Well, now there won't be a fair either," said one of the protesters. They stress that they want people to see what agriculture looks like in Serbia.
"Your children are here. You should be by these people's side, not beating them with sticks. We are peasants, you cannot stop us, we are not mercenaries, we are not freeloaders. We are the culture, not you," one of the farmers told police.
The students from Subotica set off on foot this morning for Belgrade, where they are due to arrive on 15 March, when a large student protest will take place. I BGNES
