Critically endangered monkey born at zoo in England

Macaques are one of more than 20 different endangered and rare species that live at East Sussex Animal Park.

A zoo in East Sussex, England celebrates the birth of a critically endangered monkey.

The baby celebes crested macaque was born at Drusillas Park in Alfriston in January.

A zoo spokesman said they were "particularly excited" as the unnamed baby's parents, shy mother Ahsoka and father Motek, "didn't get on at first".

Gemma Romanis, the head carer, said that "after some persistence they have come to an understanding and the result is the birth of a beautiful new baby", the BBC reported.

Celebes crested macaques originate from Indonesia and are known for their black fur, striking amber eyes and bright pink backsides.

According to the zoo, the birth represents a crucial boost for this endangered species.

"The baby, which we are 95% sure is a female, is doing very well. It's great to see Ahsoka, who is a first time mother, embracing motherhood with a new confidence that we are all excited about. We are all proud to be able to contribute to saving this beautiful primate from extinction," explained Romanis. | BGNES
