Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca became the 10th youngest champion in ATP history after defeating home favorite Francisco Cerundolo in the Buenos Aires final.
The 18-year-old, ranked No. 99 in the world and playing in his first career final, outlasted his opponent 6-4, 7-6 (1). Fonseca twice failed to close out the match in his favor, serving for the title, but regrouped in the tiebreak for the famous victory on Cerundolo's home turf. The Next Gen champion is the youngest South American to win a Tour title and will climb to No. 68 in the rankings.
"It's an incredible week, even in Argentina there are some Brazilians who support me. It's just incredible. Every Brazilian, every person in their country wants this kind of support from their country. For me, this moment that I'm experiencing is just amazing. Of course I want to be number 1 and win Grand Slam titles, but my dream is just to play tennis and I'm living it", Fonseca said after the match.
The Brazilian reached the final after saving two match points in the quarterfinals before defeating Mariano Navone in a match that lasted nearly three hours. Fonseca had already burst onto the world tennis scene in January when he qualified for the Australian Open and knocked out top 10 player Andrey Rublev in the first round in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Miomir Kecmanovic won the trophy in Delray Beach after a stunning comeback against Alejandro Davidovic Fokina in the final, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. In the third decisive set, the Serb was trailing 2-5 and had to save two match points in the eighth game before ultimately winning the title. | BGNES
